The short, easy answer is yes. There are a few things you need to know before taking your Sunlit on a plane. Providing you plan ahead and follow the basic instructions, airline travel is easy with the Sunlit. It will check as free baggage with most airlines but you are required to carry the battery on with you, which is the component that most of the rules apply to.
  • Be sure to contact your specific airline to ask for their procedures for transporting a battery powered mobility device.
  • Inform your airline that the device contains a Lithium-ion battery and it is a 240 or 288 Watt Hour size. Airline Travel IATA, USDOT and FAA regulations allow one Lithium-ion battery of up to 300 Watt Hours or two spare batteries not exceeding 160 Watt Hour each for “passengers whose mobility is restricted by either disability, their health or age, or a temporary mobility problem (e.g. a broken leg) as a carry on for the passenger.
  • The battery must be removed from the Sunlit prior to the Sunlit being transported on the airplane. The battery must be carried by the passenger as a carry on item.
  • We currently offer three different spare batteries – 2*Standard 24V/6.6AH battery for N5513A, 1* Long Range 24V/20AH battery for W5517 and 1*Long Range 24V/12Ah battery for W5905. BE AWARE – All the three electric wheelchairs are allowed on airlines. The N5513A model has two 158.4 Watt Hour batteries, which is in accordance with the airline's regulations. The W5517 model has a 480 Watt Hour battery, and the W5905 model has a 288 Watt Hour battery.
  • You must notify the airlines in advance that you will be bringing a Lithium-ion battery for your Sunlit. They are then required to notify your pilot of the location of the battery in the aircraft. Thus, you should notify your flight attendant of its location before take off.
  • You may be required to tape over the power terminal openings in the battery compartment of the Sunlit prior to transportation. Individual airline procedures may vary.
